Gingerbread Men

75g (3 oz) brown sugar
2 tbsp golden syrup
1 tbsp black treacle
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground mixed spice or cinnamon
1 tbsp water
90g ( 3 1/2 oz) margarine
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
200g (8 oz) plain flour
Sweets or currants to decorate

gingerbread men

1)  Put the sugar, syrup, treacle, ginger, mixed spice/cinnamon and water in a saucepan.  Heat the mixture on a medium heat until it starts to boil.  Take the pan off the heat.

2)  Stir the bicarbonate of soda into the sugar mixture, and stir in the margarine until it melts.

3) Stir in the flour.  You should now have a very gloopy 'dough'.  Scoop it out of the pan and into a mixing bowl, and let it cool down and solidify for at least 30 minutes.

4) Roll out the dough on a floured board, with a floured rolling pin, until it is about 3 or 4mm thick.

4) Cut out gingerbread men with a cutter or knife.  I drew shapes onto the dough with a cocktail stick first.

5) Carefully lift your gingerbread men with a spatula and lay them onto your greased baking tray. If you want to, decorate them with jelly tots or currants.

6) Bake in the oven for 10 - 15  minutes at  180ºC/350ºF until they are cooked.  (15 minutes gives a crunchier texture.)  Lift them carefully off the tray and lay them onto a cooling rack until cool.

Snail Sandwiches

A slice of bread, white or brown
Choice of filling (something that you will be able to spread, e.g. jam or cheese spread)
Small pieces of carrot or liquorice
Snail sandwiches
Trim the crusts off the bread and then spread your chosen filling so that it covers one side of the slice completely. Carefully roll up the bread until you have a log shape, which you can then slice into pieces about 2-3cm thick. Stand the spirals of bread on their sides with the edge of the bread just poking out from the bottom, as shown above, you can then add some small pieces of either carrot or liquorice to make the stalks for the eyes.

Place the snails on a bed of chopped up lettuce.

Smiley Face Pizza

Mini pizza bases
Tomatoe puree
Grated cheese
Cherry tomatoes
Sliced peppers & mushrooms
pizza
Spread tomatoes puree onto pizza base. Sprinkle on the grated cheese. Decorate the pizza with the other ingredients to make a smiley face e.g. tomatoes for the eyes, mushroom for the nose, slices pepper for the mouth. An adult should put the cook the pizza for about 12 minutes at a moderately high temperature. Allow the pizza to cool slightly before serving to young children as the cheese and tomatoes can become very hot.
